Leggings are tight, form-fitting trousers that extend from the waist to the ankles; in the United States, they are sometimes referred to as tights. Leggings are typically made from a blend of lycra, and either nylon, cotton, or a cotton-polyester blend. However, leggings can also be made from wool, silk, and various synthetic fabrics as well.

Leggings made from a nylon-lycra blend (usually 90% nylon, 10% lycra) are traditionally worn for exercise, although beginning in the 1980s they have also been worn for fashion. Nylon lycra leggings are often referred to as bicycle or running tights, and are shinier in appearance than those made from cotton. Many have racing stripes or reflective patterns to further distinguish them as athletic wear and provide extra safety.

Leggings made from cotton-lycra, or a cotton-polyester-lycra combination, are more typically worn for fashion, but are also common as fitness apparel as well. Although cotton lycra leggings can come in many colors, black, navy, and various shades of gray remain the most commonly worn. Children's leggings also come in a variety of colorful prints and designs

The classic striped leggings, now available in neon. Seeing these under a black light is kind of a life changing experience.

Leggings are typically ankle-length; they are occasionally stirrupped, or less commonly, footed. Since socks are normally worn over the top of leggings, rather than underneath, stirrups prevent the leggings from becoming untucked from the sock.

Just because leggings are considered the “sisters” of tights, it does not mean that they can be worn with dresses only.  Leggings can be worn with long shirts. The crucial rule of wearing leggings is to always wear a top that covers your butt and goes slightly further. In this particular set, leggings are combined with long white shirt, and the bright accessories of warm color make the look dressy and elegant.

Leggings can be our best friends, when we want to wear short dresses, but we are hesitating. Here when leggings can come really handy, because they can be very flattering to our legs, and any short dress is not as revealing anymore when combined with leggings.  Leggings will compliment a kaftan dress, as it is demonstrated in this set. Although for illustration purposes I used the black leggings for all five looks, I believe that dark navy leggings would work as well in this set.

How to wear leggings

Long cardigans are great for wearing with leggings. You can also add a thin belt to the outfit to accentuate your waistline. Personally, I love the presence of turquoise color in this set. I believe that brown or beige leggings would look even better here. The golden color bracelet and the bag, which features three colors, complete the outfit by making it sophisticated. The platform ankle boots go really well with this particular outfit. As a rule of thumb, flats are very appropriate to wear with leggings. If you decide to wear leggings with heels, be careful not to look too 80s. By the way, no-heels high boots are also great for wearing with leggings.
Here is another example of how leggings can be worn with denim jacket. The bright color necklace, as well as flats and big purse make the look summery and fresh. At the same time this look is super comfortable.

Love the dots patterned tights with the dress and heels, beautiful.

Wolford patterned tights collection

patterned tights trend is only getting more popular in 2013! spice up any outfit with all different patterns that fit your style

he patterned tights are an unexpected way to add interest to any look, and have emerged as a popular choice among celebrities and fashion magazines.
Here are ways to rock this trend, stay warm, and look great all at the same time.
fancy pattern tights by Platino

For the most flattering look, it's often best to choose patterns with small graphics such as tiny polka dots or little flowers.
Unless you're very confident keep the rest of your outfit simple.
Graphic tights or leggings look great tucked into boots but try them with pumps, too, if you're daring!

If you're self conscious about your legs, try letting patterned tights peek out just between your boots and a ¾ lengths skirt or this seasons thigh high boots and a mini skirt.

If you're mixing prints stay within the same color family  or go with contrasting colors.

One of the easiest ways to wear it would be with a simple/plainish black sheath dress and plain black pumps. As long as your tights are not fish net, I am sure it would look nice.
If you are a little apprehensive, you can ease yourself into this trend by wearing it with simple black boots. This way you hide most of the tights in boots.
Try and keep everything else solid/plain/understated. If you do want to mix patterns try and keep distance between the patterns...like the above picture with plain skirt and cardigan with a printed scarf. Try and stick to similar colours if combining patterns and make sure you have one main plain/solid article on to pull it all together.

Fishnet tights

Fishnet stockings or tights are not the easiest of looks to pull off and still look like a lady. To make fishnets appear more elegant, here are a few suggestions.
Wear fishnets only if you like them. There is little point forcing yourself to wear a fashion item you can't stand, as you simply won't carry it off while worrying about it!

Wear the right clothing. Fishnets paired with a miniand high heels are suggestive of quite the opposite of ladylike clothing. Instead, wear your fishnets with a skirt that sits just above the knee. A skirt that is longer is also fine.

Keep the rest of your clothing simple. Avoid patterns or prints that compete with the fishnets and let the fishnets be the interesting fashion statement only. Wear tailored shirts, bespoke jackets, and neat clothing as a whole. Keep the makeup toned right down, and the accessories and jewelry likewise. Pearls work well as elegant understatement jewelery.

Pretty Polly fishnet

-->
Consider wearing fishnets that have finer mesh. These will appear less "racy" and more toned down than wider meshed fishnets. The smaller the diamond shapes, the better the look and the easier it is to suggest sophistication.

Leighton Meester goes blue from head to toe including a pair of blue fishnet tights

Wear appropriately colored fishnets. Stick with black, brown, or nude for daywear.

Wear closed toe shoes. Avoid anything open-toed as it looks messy. Boots are also a fine option; indeed a knee-length dress or skirt with knee-high boots and a touch of fishnet in between can be very ladylike provided the clothing is good quality.

Wear solid tights underneath fishnets. Choose an interesting color for the tights, and make it bright for extreme contrast (providing it matches the rest of your outfit). For day wear, choose office-acceptable colors like navy blue and dark green; for the evening, be more daring, especially when coupling the tights and fishnet combination with the little black dress.

 Silky tights

If you choose to wear colorful tights, there are some things you should avoid - they won't quite match with colorful dresses with big prints (the tights are already colored). When wearing block colored tights, opt for shoes in neutral shades.
Wearing tangerine tights would be the most fashionable look for this winter. To avoid looking like you dressed for Halloween, don't wear them with black clothes, but with a darker browns or other lighter colors. If you'd rather be adventurous, a shocking color mix with contrasts can offer you a dynamic, astonishing look. In this case, you can try plaid prints with colored tights and a pair of boots.

The red tights are the ones call for black and may be the easiest way to create a winter holiday look.

Matte or glossy tights? Well, the matte ones will make you look slimmer, but the shiny ones look glamorous and classy.

Natural and black tights emphasize your clothes and gorgeous legs. It is the easiest way to create a sophisticated but still polished look and keep your legs warm during the cold season, while looking very trendy.

Firehosiery photoshots

There are three simple ways to match them to your outfit:

- match the tights with your dress or shoe color.

- choose to make contrasts and wear yellow shoes to a purple dress for example; or primary colors, which will make the contrasts even bigger.

- wear plaid print tights and keep your clothes neutral and simple for a preppy look.

Jonathan Aston tights

Also, pay attention to your body shape! Bright colored tights are best worn by girls with long slim legs; just keep in mind, the thicker the legs, the darker the tights. If you want to create the illusion of longer and slimmer legs, try purple/plum shades. You can match them with neutral shades, lighter browns, or even nude, camel colored wools for winter. Also, you can get the same slimmer, longer illusion of legs if you match them to your shoes' color - the effect will instantly elongate your legs. Neon colored tights are more extreme and easy to match with jeans and boots.
A more important thing to pay attention to would be the prints.
Try to avoid big prints, horizontal stripes, or very colored printed tights.
These will thicken your legs and are very hard to match. If you still decide to wear printed tights, just keep the rest of your look as simple as you can

Hold ups

Hold Ups, also known as stay ups, are a fantastic alternative to tights. They are just as sexy as stockings, but you do not need a suspender belt to wear them.

The differenc between hold up and stocking

Hold ups

I prefer these to tights and come in the same or more variety as far awesome patterns you can get. Hold Ups are stockings that can be worn with or without suspenders. They glamour of stockings with the convenience of tights! Hold Ups, unlike stockings come in a wide variety of textures, materials and patterns. They are usually made from nylon or a Lycra blend. They are both sexy and functional for daily wear. They are harder to find in the States and are far more comfortable then tights.

Stockings
Stockings usually come in nylon or in Silk and have to be worn with Garters or a Garter belt.

Sheer Hosiery
Sheer hosiery is an excellent way to showcase your womanly side while making your outfits look more complete and classy.
Sheer tights are timeless and ooze sex & style appeal, and can really give your legs that subtle sex appeal that many men find very attractive!

Glossy Tights
Glossy tights and stockings are cocktail waitresses secret weapon to flawless and sexy legs. They're one of a savvy woman's arsenal of tools that can take your legs from drab to fab.
If you want to look sexy for a guy or just want your legs to look great for an evening night out then you should slip on a pair of high gloss tights!

Wool Tights
Wool tights are perfect with short hemlines in the winter. A must if you love wearing skirts all-year-around.
They're super-versatile and go with different outfits - from preppy college gal to rocker chick, classy lady to the trendy babe.

Thigh High Socks
I think long socks are a trend-essential for the cool winter months. They look chic and cute, but you can always turn them into something edgier to suit your personal fashion style

Fashion Leggings
Basic Spandex leggings complement most outfits and color combos, but a pair of fun fashion leggings spruce up your look! Some of my favorite legging styles are leather and denim, and I'm definitely loving the ones with lace texture.
Most fashion tights are eye-catching, so you need to be careful with what you choose and how you wear it.

Leather Leggings
I personally like the gloss of this hosiery because opposed to plain black leggings, it adds a whole new dimension of edgy chic.
Leather leggings inject an exciting feel and and a completely different texture to your outfit. If you love wearing black as much as I do then faux leather leggings are a must in your wardrobe!

Donna Karan hosiery

Lace Tights
Lace hosiery can be made romantic, sophisticated, elegant, edgy and/or sexy.
But it's the way you combine them with other clothes and accessories will determine the look they present.

Spandex Leggings
A pair of basic Spandex leggings are a quick-fix when you want to wear something underneath a very short dress, a mini skirt or with tunic tops and shirts.

Cardigan– Dorothy Perkins, Skirt – Modcloth, Sneakers– Zappos, Bag– Dorothy Perkins, Bangle– Zappos, Bracelet – Zappos, Tights – Bergdorf Goodman

This look is much more casual than the first, but just as warm and stylish. Here, I paired the jacket with some

awesome leopard print shorts and a quirky black and white graphic tee. Black tights, worn underneath the shorts,

keep this outfit winter-friendly, and these great sneakers (which I’ve used in CF posts before – they’re just so

perfect…) are comfortable AND stylish.

I chose a floral patterned dress, which adds a great contrast when worn with a tough faux-leather jacket. Some opaque tights add warmth, while these slouchy Chuck Taylor's are both stylish and comfortable. Accessorize with some always-cool Wayfarers and an oversized bag that will hold all the stuff you need for a super-busy day.

Ultra Sheer

Normally this terminology is used when talking about products that are 10 denier or below. They are normally used in the summer months as they are light and airy or for very special evenings out. This product is designed to make your legs look as if you’re not wearing hosiery at all but is aimed at smoothing your legs and giving an even skin tone.
Normally ultra sheer hosiery is designed to be worn with sandals or very strappy shoes. This makes them ideal for the summer months or for those gorgeous strappy sandals that you purchased for that big night out!
We have put a collection of ultra sheer products together for you. Why not take a look.

Sheer

It’s usual for this hosiery to be between 10 and 20 denier. Mostly, woman wear sheer hosiery during warmer weather and can be purchased in different colours and finishes. Obviously, the 20 denier products will be more durable than the 10 denier and will lend themselves to greater wear and tear. If you are undecided as to which finish to chose why not try matt for a flawless natural look or go for the glossy look if you want to get your legs on show!
Again these products lend themselves to be worn with sandals or strappy shoes given that they normally have a sheer toe.
Once again, we’ve put a collection of sheer products together for you. Take a look and hopefully you’ll find something you like

LBD little black dress with tights

How to Accessorize the Little Black Dress

1.Create a conservative look with your LBD. For a conservative look, go for accessories that look clean and pretty, but not too bold. Pearls, small earrings, and tasteful necklaces or bracelets come to mind, as do shoes that are more conservative like black Patten leather heals or ballerinas. This is a good look for work.

2
2.Make your LBD look trendy. For a trendier look, go for a fun shoe that has a stiletto heel, and some bigger, bolder jewelry, like a statement necklace. This is a good look for cocktail parties or dinner.

3.Put together a funky look with your LBD. To funk up your LBD, add a lot of color, like a metallic shoe, or some neon stockings. This is a good look for younger women getting ready to attend a trendy gallery opening or to make an appearance at a new club

Choose Your Jewels

1.Wear big earrings with your LBD. Sometimes earrings are all you need, and if this is the case, pick a big and bold pair. Dangly, Hoops, or Studs can all work, as long as they make a statement. This is not the time for anything dainty, and remember to wear your hair up to make the earrings known.
2.Pair your LBD with a statement necklace. A bold necklace adds instant pizzazz to a LBD. If you want something more conservative, go for more classic colors like silver, black, or pearls. For something a little funkier, pick a necklace with chunky stones and more color.

3.Put on a great watch to accent your LBD. Try a men’s-inspired (aka big) watch with your LBD. A watch is also classic enough to be conservative yet cool enough to be trendy.
4.Break out the bold bracelets. Try stacking a few great bracelets together, and don't be afraid to play with color here.

5.Add a brooch to your LBD. Adding a broach to an LBD is a great, more conservative way to accessorize. You could choose a vintage broach, or pair the dress with something more modern like a button-inspired brooch or even a brooch made of ribbons or feathers.

Pick Your Shoes

1.Wear boots or booties with your LBD on cooler days. A flat boot or a bootie will give more of a downtown ‘cool look’ to your LBD. Higher-heeled boots and ankle boots will add a little more polish, but will still keep the ensemble looking cool.

2.Pair your LBD with some flats. Flats are always great for keeping an outfit casual yet sophisticated at the same time. Pick a flat with a little embellishment on it to add some excitement and pair it with your brooch, or consider a pair of conservative loafers to match with your men’s-inspired watch.

3.Pick some conservative heels to wear with your LBD. A shoe with a lower heel (3” or below) in a neutral color like a nude or black is great for keeping your look conservative but still polished. This is a great type of shoe to wear with a pearl necklace.

4.Wear fun heels to liven up your LBD. To really dress up your LBD, pick a stiletto heel in a fun color or style. Experiment with heel shape and height, color, and embellishment.

Dress Up Your Legs

1.Wear black tights to create a sophisticated, classy, and conservative look.

2.Put on a pair of brown, nude or gray stockings with your LBD. Neutral tights or stockings are just as conservative as black, but are just a little less edgy.

3.Experiment with colorful stockings. Other colored tights, such as purple, orange, or even bright red can look great, but are probably better suited for a cocktail party or a night out than to wear during the day to the office. If you don’t work in a conservative setting though, give this option a try

Pick a Handbag

1.Wear a larger shoulder or handbag with your LBD. One of these larger bags is perfect for everyday use, as you can just throw all your essentials in it – even your lunch. Neutral colors are great because you can wear them each day of the week without needing to transfer the contents of your purse each time you switch outfits but if you want to spruce up your ensemble, pick a handbag in a fun color like pink or red. You could also pair your bag with an accessory you love wearing with your LBD. For example, if you always wear your grandmother’s citrine brooch with your dress, find a large shoulder bag in yellow to match.

2.Accessorize your LBD with a cross-body bag. A cross-body bag is a little more bohemian, and perfect for a night out or to wear to an edgy party.

3.Grab a clutch to go with your LBD. A clutch handbag, though small, is the most dressy or all purses, and perfect for the evening. Traditionally, etiquette dictated that women wore only clutches to evening engagements and left the straps at home. Choose a fun color or one with sequins to really jazz up your LBD.

Finish Your Look

1Wear a button-down cardigan with your LBD. This is an ideal option if you want to bring an extra layer with you in case it gets cold.

2.Wrap a pashmina around your shoulders to add color and warmth to your LBD

3.Add a scarf to your LBD. There are a variety of ways you can add a scarf to your LBD to dress it up as well as to add versatility to your ensemble. Consider wearing an Hermes scarf with your LBD.

4.Add a pair of sunglasses to finish off the look. You can either pick a more conservative pair of black sunglasses to wear with your LBD during the daytime, or choose a style that is more ‘in the now’ like one with white rims or in a green or purple hue.

Red dress

Another essential for any woman is the red cocktail dress. It's not as important as the must-have LBD (little black dress), but it's nonetheless an indispensable piece. With a red evening dress, you'll feel sassy, bold, alive, beautiful and little bit of naughty ;-)
It gives you almost everything you need to feel and look right for the occasion. And did you also know that the color red has been scientifically proven to elevate your self-confidence? Yup, it's definitely a must-own look-effortlessly-hot item!
Unlike most dresses, the red evening dress with high heel black pumps is the ultimate show-stoppers for any occasion. So if you're bored with the black cocktail dress, then go for red!

Red Dress and Lace Tights

The best length for a red dress is at the knee or shorter. It shows more of your legs and make you look taller and leaner. Calf-lengths are a bit tricky because they tend to overpower most body figures - not to mention that it tends to make petites look frumpy.
If you're on a budget and want to be able to wear the same dress multiple times for various occasions - then buy a red dress in a timeless style. Like for example a basic knee-length V-neck dress with short or three-quarter sleeves.
Securing a simple dress makes it easier for you to create various fashion looks with it! Use scarves, jewelry and shoes to reflect your personal style.

There are also several ways to accessorize this red-hot piece. However, I recommend you to go light on the extras as the color is already eye catching enough.
If you decide to go for the whole fashion look charade, try to imagine an outfit theme that you want to create with the dress. For example: Do you want to look glamorous? Classy? Bohemian?

For example if you're attending a semi-formal event - go classy and minimal on the accessories. But you can turn up the heat when you're out clubbing by adding the extra sparkles and trendy shoes.
Gold, black and silver. And they're excellent for adding interest and highlight the dress. With me, I always make sure that my jewelry is in solid metal. I might also throw in pearls or clear crystals to achieve a high-glam look.

PASTEL MONDAY

Actually at the moment I'm mostly only doing some crunches (2 x 50) and a 10min Victoria's Secret workout which I discovered a few weeks ago. Whenever I find time I'm also training one hour or one and a half with my exercise bike while watching some cooking shows or some other stupid shows on TV. I don't know why, but this is very helpful for me to relax and unwind after a long day of work. As you see I'm actually quite fit, but this 10min VS-workout I have mentioned just before is really killing me (especially after the endurance training) and I feel it the whole next day. But it helps and the 10min go over soooo fast because there are different exercises each just a minute or less. That brings a lot of variety and you feel like you was training just for 5min or so. Ok, I should stop talking now and just share the link with you, so you can check it by yourself: ..........

BURBERRY LOOK

In one of my last posts, I told you that I'm never blindly craving for all the seasonal 'must haves'. I tend to pick specifically only the ones that absolutely blow my mind... and that was the case when I saw the 'rainbow' collection of coats from Burberry Prorsum ss2013! You should see those tears of excitement when  instead of usual silver-gold version of this trend, the runway was fulfilled with juicy violets, greens, reds and yellows! I literary went  m a d  and knew that I won't give up until I find a coat that's similar.

CUT OUT SUNDAY

I received this lovely cut out dress from Oh my Love a few weeks ago, but I didn't find the right occasion to wear it yet, as it's way to cold to wear it for going out. So I decided to put it on especially for this little shooting. I love the cut out details on the shoulder and on the back and I even more love the fabric of that dress. So I was n urgent need to share it with you. How can I keep such a great dress away from you, how can I not show you until growing temperatures? So I took of the challenge, put the dress on, put a necklace on, combined it with my first pair of KG heels, grabbed my transparent clutch, put my iPhone in, put some lipstick on, finished my smokey eyes, get out in the cold, took the pictures! Actually it wasn't as cold as I expected outside as there was no wind blowing. So I felt pretty comfortable and with always having in my mind what a beautiful dress I'm wearing, the time went by very quickly. So enjoy the result.

Berkshire Hosiery

Berkshire has been a leading name in legwear since 1906.  Manufactured in North Carolina, Berkshire hosiery uses a  sewing and shaping technique that provides for extremely well-fitting and comfortable pantyhose, stockings and knee-highs.

Berkshire products use a hand-sewn shaped panel in some of their lines, including Berkshire queen-size pantyhose, providing styles that fit right and are comfortable even in the largest sizes. Their control-top pantyhose are fabricated from a high-quality spandex that offers more control than other pantyhose brands.

Many of the Berkshire manufacturing processes are done by hand; materials are chosen for their quality, and their in-house design team is recognized as an industry leader. Designs, especially for larger sizes are not simply bigger versions of average sizes. Berkshire's Plus-Size hosiery offers construction specifically designed to provide the best possible fit for larger women.

Over the years the Berkshire product line has expanded to include fishnet pantyhose and thigh-highs, opaque tights, crochet pantyhose and thigh-highs, knee-highs and maternity light-support hosiery. You'll find almost any color you're looking for as well. Along with ivories, beiges, white and black, some styles are offered in silvery gray, chocolate and navy. Sexy seamed  lace top stockings are also available in sizzling red.
One of Berkshire's standout benefits is the fit. We repeatedly hear how well their products fit, whether thigh highs, panty hose, footless tights or knee highs. Thigh highs are notorious for sliding down; not so with Berkshire. They offer many styles of thigh-high stockings too, from lace top to shimmery legs to textured. Thigh high stockings come in sizes to fit most women, including queen sizes. And all the Berkshire legwear is designed to conform to your shape--no sagging, bagging or wrinkling around the ankles.

Berkshire tights and panty hose keep their shape beautifully, all day long. Tights are available in many styles, including opaque, control-top, striped, footless tights and cold-weather cozy tights. Customers says they're very soft and priced very affordably. Berkshire's pantyhose sets an industry standard for fit and style. Whether you're looking for everyday basics, like sheer control tops, or fun, decorative styles, you'll find pantyhose to suit you. Some styles are offered in a high-quality fishnet. Other decorative styles include shimmer leg, pointelle patterns, sheers with metallic accents and a crochet-style patterned pantyhose. In fact, there is a Berkshire style for all of your hosiery needs.
Berkshire also serves the maternity market with light support and opaque pantyhose. The light support style has a pretty lace tummy panel that will expand with your body. We're told they're extremely comfortable, too and hold up very well.

Founded in 1906, in the era of silk stockings, Berkshire became a national brand in the post World War II years with the introduction of nylon. The company was purchased in 1977 by Meyer Hosiery Company, a family owned business.   Today, Berkshire remains a family company and continues a decades-long tradition of fine hosiery. Manufacturing takes place in the United States, in Burlington, North Carolina.

The history of tights
Up until the 18th Century tights were worn by men.

Women wore stockings held up by garters just above the knee.

At the start of the 20th Century women's silk stockings were held up by suspender belts.

In 1920 the first man made fibre Rayon was invented.
Nylon (polyamide) was invented in 1937 by Wallace Carruthers and nylon stockings first went on sale in 1939.
In 1957 Bear Brand started manufacturing nylon tights for use in the performing arts and for children, but the adult public were not interested in them. Making them in the 'fully fashioned' was costly - knitted in flat pieces and sewn together at the back of the leg. The invention of circular knitting enables the production of stockings without a back seam and reduced production costs.
Seam free stockings became more common in 1958.
Lycra was invented in 1959.
Mary Quant started producing tights in 1965. By 1967 the mini skirt became fashionable and so stockings and suspenders became less popular. There was a huge and sudden demand for tights. Some manufacturers simply sown stockings on to nylon panties! Tights were seen as a leg covering and most were produced in natural shades to give the appearance of suntanned legs.
1967 saw the introduction of one size stockings and hold-ups. "Pop-sox" or knee highs were first sold in 1968.
The 1970's saw the introduction of coloured and then patterned tights. Dior produced 101 different colours of unpatterened sheer tights. There were small dots, big dots, heart shapes and fake seams on sheer tights. In 1984 Lady Di was seen wearing tights with a bow motif on the ankle and a fashion craze followed.
The addition of Lycra to the yarn in 1972 made better fitting tights.

tights before and after Lycra

Later on by adding more Lycra to the panty manufacturers were able to make control-top and slimming-type tights.
By 1973 tights accounted for 75% of the hosiery market, and by 1983 over 90%. Then manufacturers started to market stockings as a more luxurious/sexy item and by 1989 stockings were 18% of hosiery sales.
American football player Joe Namath appears in a pantyhose advertisement in the early-1970s.
In the mid 1980s opaque tights became popular followed by leggings/footless tights. Originally opaques were popular for winter wear, with ribbed and woolen tights. Later velvet opaques, shiny opaques and then textured opaques were produced.
Ultra sheer tights 5 and 7 Denier were introduced in 1989.
In the 1990s coloured and patterned tights went out of fashion. Black opaque, black sheer and natural coloured sheers dominated the market. Glossy sheers became more popular in the later 1990s, with Pretty Polly marketing a Nylons range with nostalgic advertising.
Seam-free tights were developed in the mid-1990s, with both legs and the body knitted in one piece with no seams and then a hole was cut for the addition of the waist band.

                                  50's

Nylons or Stockings

If you have never worn the stocking of the 1950s you will experience a sensuous moment when you slide them onto your legs.  Stocking in the 1950s felt different.  They were fine and cool and silky to the touch.  They felt like the height of luxury as if you were about to give your legs a beauty treatment just by wearing them.
Unlike pantyhose tights which are sized small, medium, large, extra large etc., 50's stockings came in foot sizes.  To find your size to wear flat fully fashioned seamed stockings measure the length of your foot.  If it measures 9 inches long, a size 9 would suit you, but if you have fatter legs a larger size may be better.
I recall though that the largest stocking size you could buy was an 11.  This was all very well if you had slender legs, but for those poor souls with larger legs the width of the stocking was taken up by the fatter leg and so the stocking did not go so far up the leg as it might on a tall slim leggy woman. This was never much trouble for most people, but lumps of fat could hang over stocking tops and often did.  It was not necessary to have a much fatter leg to develop the thigh bulge.  But the main problem for most people occurred when skirts gradually shortened in the 1960s and stocking tops were seen as ugly and giving an overall poorly groomed fashion look.  That is when tights really developed for the masses.
Stocking sizes ranged from size 8 to size 11 going up in half sizes.  The fit varied from brand to brand, but fully fashioned seamed stocking were well shaped on the foot and heel although the yarn used was not stretchy and sometimes a little bagging could happen so that fine wrinkles appeared. It was essential to either check your seams were straight using a back mirror or get a sister or friend to tell you nothing was crooked.
Better brands made longer stocking lengths and by the end of the decade more people wore the newer seamless stockings first introduced in 1952, but slow to capture the public's affection.  Once yarns with better cling were introduced they were seen more and more.

                                  60s

Death of Stockings

What made the mini really acceptable was the introduction of pantyhose known mostly today as tights.  It was hard to wear a mini dress with stockings and feel confident, but with tights there was protection from the elements and no unsightly glimpse of stocking tops.  Stockings died in the mid 1960s and were only revived as leg wear in the 1990s or else kept for the bedroom.

Pantyhose

When tights were first introduced in the 1960s it liberated women from girdles, roll-ons andsuspender belts. It's difficult to know which came first the skirt or the tights, but the introduction of seamless stockings had started the tights revolution. What is certain it is unlikely the one could have existed without the other as no groomed young lady ever went out bare legged then.
A pair of Wolsey tights cost about £1 in 1965 and with careful daily washing they could be made to last a month. Marks and Spencer was soon churning out lower cost versions. Obviously planned obsolescence has been introduced since then for all brands, as most of us now find it difficult to make them last for more than a day or two's wear.
Tights in the late 60s were often patterned with arrangements of diamonds or other motifs and a favourite colour of the era was a golden brown called American Tan.  Fishnet tights were also popular briefly.  Lurex glitter tights in gold or silver were a hit for the Christmas period.

Christian Dior: 60s

                                                                     70s

For those who still liked to show a leg, it became tasteful in the early 70s to wear creamy white tights with black patent shoes.

Trousers and trouser suits were serious fashions in the 1970s.
Pants began gently flared and reached wide bell bottom proportions by about 1975. After which they slowly reduced to straight and wide until by the end of the seventies they were finally narrow again. Popular fabrics included heavy crepes, wool jersey knits, Courtelle jersey and woven Polyester suiting such as Trevira.  Emerald green, apple green and bottle green were all favoured fashion colours of the early 1970s.
Right - Green trouser suit pattern of 1971. This style of trouser suit with a hip length tunic, was very typical of fashion trends of 1971 and 1972.
Farrah Fawcett Major and her actress colleagues of the series 'Charlie's Angels' helped popularise not only flared trousers, but also a rough cut hairstyle  which demanded constant use of tongs, or heated rollers to make the hair flicks.  Many women kept spare electric curling tongs or heated rollers at work, to maintain the flickups in Farrah style.
Tights sales plummeted when some women chose to wear pop socks beneath trousers. Heavy crepes used to make wide legged trousers often emulated the Chanel trousers of the 1930s. They were worn with small knitted short vests or scoop neck tank tops. Waistcoats were popular in any length from traditional, to hip length to maxi.

                                                             80s

By the 1980s, patterned tights returned, but now they were spotted or delicately textured lace, striped or enhanced with embellishment such as a flock flower, embroidery or diamante at the ankle. In the mid to late 80s, coloured tights sheer, opaque or solid that toned and matched coordinated shoes could be seen everywhere.  Vaguely Black sheer tights were worn with power suits through the eighties.

Chanel Ad's 1980s

-->

Louis Feraud 1980s

90s

In the late 80s and early 90s the stocking with lace top holding itself up was suddenly noticed to be more erotic than a pair of tights. Leggings were a common sight in the early 90s and continued to be worn well past their sell by date in the privacy of homes.
By the early 1990s the only tights to wear with the short skirt of the time was black and opaque. By the late 90s the bare nude look leg was in vogue and natural toned tights were acceptable again. Many younger women simply abandoned tights altogether preferring the totally natural leg. Never before frowned upon until the nineties, the biggest faux pas was to wear tights with open strappy sandals.
At the same time many variations of tights came into the shops. These could range from soft and sheer to shiny, support or bare effects. Wearing tights still remains correct for business wear and it's best to avoid bare legs for any occasion unless the legs are silky smooth and fuzz free.

Retro is a culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion, from the overall post-modern past, that has since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. The use of "retro" style iconography and imagery interjected into post-modern art, advertising, mass media, etc. It generally implies a vintage of at least fifteen or twenty years. For example, clothing from the 1980s or 1990s could be retro.

Would you believe I bought these tights from Farmers for $3 - as they only lasted one wear it seems you do in fact get what you pay for!  To be fair to the tights I am a hard wearer and the only ones that seem to last for me are opaques.  I've heard the tricks about clear nail polish to stop runs, etc but I just don't seem to be able to make stockings last.

Black Velvet

Here we are at the second episode of 2040: how to wear the same garment or fabric when you are 20 year old and 40 year old. Because peering through your mom's closet (or daughter's!) is beautiful! When I think about velvet I think about the green dress with a white collar that my mom made me wear when I was young on special occasions. I've always associated it with childhood. I don't see a reason why, though, I shouldn't wear it also in "adult" age (aaaah I don't like this word). This dress was my mom's that has wore it when she was my age. It's impregnated by her memories and I embellished it with mine. It was the dress of my 18th birthday and now it is also a symbol of how this special fabric can be worn by a 20 year old ... And by a 40-year old.Sandra wears a velvet jacket combined with a funny voluminous skirt!

Half and a half

Good morning to all of you! There are just few days left for the new year and I have left you for so long, I know, but I haven't been at home for four months and if I barely have time in Madrid, here at home is impossible. But don't worry, I'll make you feel so jealous because you won't get rid of my Christmas photos at the beach :P You just have to wait few more days.
Meanwhile, I bring you this 'cursed' look, I've decided to call it this way because the first time I took photos from it I lost most of them when I was trying to copythe photos from the camera to the laptop, and the second time I tried, it happened the same, so I have to show show you those photos I could save from both of them, and although it is not one of my favourite I wanted to show you this beautiful tights.

Gold digger

Finally friday and a polemic week into the "blogger" world is over, where so many things were said, wondering if some brands give presents to some bloggers or not, if some of them buy presents to themselves to pretend to be a VIP, etc. And since all that is not a part of my world and I'm just another human being, today I bring you a new outfit that I hope you enjoy and could give you any idea for the weekend. With a coat for sure, since cold days have come back to Madrid. The whole outfit is focused on gold, not just the shorts but also the details, the nail polish, the ring (a unique handmade jewel ordered just for me by the best brand ever: my sweet mum), even the blouse buttons. With this colour I wore a simple green blouse with shorts that didn't need anything else. High heels which make every piece of clothing shine and voilà.

Mustard Me Up

I wore this outfit on Saturday but had no time to take pictures that I had to wear it again. Im in love with the necklace, it's just so unique and on trend. It's had begun to get a lot colder here in Southern Cali. Now I know that our temperatures do not compare to those in other parts of the country but low 60s is cold enough for us Cali peeps. On another note, I'm on partial vacation since I don't work my regular job for the next 3 weeks. Partial being that I start my other tutoring job. Hope you all have a wonderful start to your week.

COMIC STRIP

This comic strip trend that has been tip toeing its way into the highstreet from the catwalks ready for summer is something I'm really looking forward to playing with. Fun and playful, it will be good to make the most of the quirky pieces that I usually have to source from Black Milk or Lazy Oaf and mixing them up with pops of primary colour for a laidback summer look.
After all, perfectly sunny days seem the ideal conditions for this Lazy Oaf dress that I snapped up as soon as it launched several months ago, a rebound after falling head over heels for my Batman dress. This is as equally perfect: the print is balanced with the simple cut and fit, leaving it firmly on the right side of crazy. I can't wait for the summer so I can make the most of this bad boy.

A luxurious classic, the Sensual Touch Tights from Falke are made from a high-quality cotton composition with cashmere and silk content. Velvety soft to the touch, these tights are perfect for work to evening wear.

 Denim Shorts With Tights

A great pair of denim shorts and tights together create a hot look worn by celebrities like Nicole Richie. Nicole wears a sexy pair of Daisy Duke length shorts with opaque black tights and tops like a flowy white button down and a boho style vest. It creates a look that’s sleek and chic, while remaining true to her own personal, hippy style.
If you’re interested in trying out Nicole’s look, but aren’t sure Daisy Dukes are for you, choose shorts with an inseam that’s just a bit longer. An inseam that’s between 3 and 5 inches will still look fresh, but give you a little more coverage. Avoid longer jean shorts (you know, the dreaded ‘jorts’) and Bermudas – these denim looks will just look frumpy, not stylish.

Tweed. Tights. Classic

Tweed shorts and tights create an instant classic look and celebrity fashionista Olivia Palermo is a big fan. Olivia pairs tweed shorts with everything from a dressed up button down blouse to a fun plaid shirt. She always looks chic and pulled together, no matter what she’s wearing.
Tweed shorts with tights can take you everywhere from a day at the office to a night out with friends. You just need a quick change of your top and some updated jewelry and you’ll be ready to go if a friend stops by your office and says ‘Hey, you want to go out tonight?’ Although some shorts work well with flats, stick to heels if you’re wearing tweed shorts with tights. Heels will make you look dressed up and pulled together and keep you from looking like a frumpy school teacher stuck in the 1990s.
If You’re Curvy, Choose Flowy Shorts

Curvy women often complain that some styles just aren’t for them. That’s totally untrue! If you’re curvy, like Jennifer Love Hewitt, consider wearing a pair of tights with some loose, flowing shorts.
A simple belt at the waist can emphasize your curves with a tucked in top. If you’re looking for a more romantic look, flowy shorts and a loose top can create a sweet, dreamy silhouette. Make sure that loose clothing isn’t oversized, as this can quickly overwhelm a curvy girl. Just because something is loosely fitted doesn’t mean it shouldn’t fit you! Delicate heels work best, so stick those flats back in your closet.
Shorts, Tights And Boots
Shorts, tights and boots are ideal if there’s a chill in the air, but you don’t want to give up your shorts just yet. Katie Holmes has been seen wearing a pair of denim shorts, a structured jacket, a jaunty scarf and a pair of knee high boots. It’s a look that anyone can pull off, even if you’re not Katie Holmes.
To steal Katie’s look, first start with your tights and boots and go from there. Any length of boots can work, from ankle booties, to knee length flat boots to sexy over the knee boots. Just make sure that the boots don’t reach the top of your shorts – you want a little bit of your tights to show.
Create A Monotone Look From The Waist Down

A monotone look is a great way to ease into wearing shorts with tights. Celebrities like Gwen Stefani are big fans of this look. It’s not uncommon to see Gwen wear black tights, with a black skirt and heels. Whether she’s dressed up the look for a night out with her husband (Gavin Rossdale, in case you’ve been living under a rock) or dressed down for a day at the park with her kids, Gwen always looks pulled together.
If you want to wear Gwen’s look, find a sleek, tailored pair of black shorts and pair them with opaque tights. Heels or even low boots look great and you can easily dress this outfit up or down depending on your top and accessories.
Wearing tights with shorts can be a refreshing change to your wardrobe, as long as it’s done correctly. If you’re interested in trying this look out, find yourself a great pair of tights and build your outfit from there. If you start with the tights, instead of making them an afterthought, you might be surprised at what you come up with.

This look is cool because it’s got a few boyish qualities that are balanced by a few ultra-feminine accents. I started with the black shorts, then added a simple neutral colored rugby-striped boyfriend sweater, and a slouchy grayish beanie to play off of the stripes. To even out these boyish pieces, I added a simple pair of girly black flats and a gorgeous black rhinestone cocktail ring.
Finally, for those of you who asked for colder weather options (I apologize for my lack of tights and jackets in the past few posts – this beautiful Florida weather has me spoiled!), I included a pair of cute polka dot tights to layer under the shorts for extra warmth. You could always omit them if you’re in a warmer climate!

Ever wake up one morning mid-winter and think to yourself, "No, I will not squeeze myself into those jeans another day"--well, this fashion formula has always been our solution. It's much more comfortable than a frock or skirt and let's you play with the androgynous trends ad infinitum. Pair heavy tights, riding boots, and wool shorts with a buttoned-up white blouse, a structured jacket, or a cool, 1970's sweater and we guarantee you'll feel much more chic then when you woke up that morning. Simple as it may be, there's something to be said for those standby combinations that never do you wrong.

This is one simple outfit with a slouchy jumper and coloured shorts paired with tights. Even though it’s casual I still want some pop of colour hence the shorts, so even though I will be lounging around munching away I will still look cute and of all things be comfy.

Why you should show off your beautiful legs

For many women over 40 their legs are true assets. Apart from the knees they are not prone to aging so quickly and it can add a lot of sex appeal to your outfit. Therefore, the general advice for many women over 40 is to show some leg for a hip and youthful appearance.  Although this is easy in the summer, it can be challenging for women like me who easily get cold. Tights are a perfect solution, but how can you wear them and still look hip and youthful?

Opaques

I really like opaque tights and you can get them in any colour these days. With the colour blocking trend still going strong, you can really play with the colour of your tights and make it fun. If you want a more conservative look than go with the colour of your shoes or skirt.Wolford Velvet Deluxe are good ones and so are Spanx Tight End Reversible Tights, which have a different colour at the back. Great neutral colours to own would be black, grey, brown and navy. Great fall 2012 trend colours would be burgundy and cobalt blue (both would look fantastic with either black or winter white). Do not wear opaques in nude and make sure you create a nice balance with the colours in your outfit.
I like how Jessica Quirk from What I Wore creates a very graphical look with the colours of her clothes and black tights. You can do this with different coloured tights as well so long as they are not too see-through. Although Jessica matches her shoes to her tights on this occasion, this kind of look can look equally great with shoes in a different colour that comes back in the outfit.
If you like to use pattern or colour, you can do so as long as your tights are in balance with the rest of your outfits. See how the tights don’t stand out in the image on the left? It blends in nicely with the rest of the outfit. Catherine from Not Dressed as Lamb also creates a colourful graphical look with this outfit and her tights fit right into it.

Sheer tights

Sheer tights look best in (bearly) black or very see through nude. I feel that this, together with fishnets, is the only way to wear nude tights if you want to create a modern look. Sheer nude tights that are frequently recommended are the Donna Karen nudes. In the below picture sheer black tights look very chic with the yellow dress. The Duchess of Cambridge has been credited for bringing nude tights back into favour.

Fishnets

If you want to up the sex appeal even more then this is always a consideration, but be sure to keep the rest of your outfit very classy. I would stick to black or nude only for fishnets.
Catherine from Not Dressed as Lamb uses colour and tights to create a completely different look with this dress. the dotted tights create a quirky creative look, while the fishnets are chic for the office.

Gatta tights

Textures

Flower patterns and printed pants are very much the trend right now and you may want to incorporate this trend with your tights. However, do so with care. Using patterned tights can very quickly look wrong or trashy or just draw too much attention on your legs and away from your face. If you like to use pattern, I would stick to a subtle pattern in one colour. Make sure that the pattern blends in with your outfit and it can look great.

Knee highs

Knee highs can be great under trousers and some long skirts. Follow the same guidelines as for tights. Of course you should never be able to see the end of your knee-highs.

What to avoid?

  • Flesh coloured opaque tights. These are very aging and generally don’t give you a flattering look. Some designers feel that you should avoid flesh coloured tights altogether, although I believe that very thin and natural sheer tights can look very nice with the right clothes.
  • Never show your reinforced toes of tights and knee highs in shoes.
  • In fact avoid wearing tights with sandals altogether.
  • Don’t wear socks over tights. That should be left to the teenagers.
  • 2 hue tights, too bold patterns, too bright tights.
  • Any runs and holes.
  • Also be sure to shave your legs before wearing tights.

Add some drama and prints to your workwear with patterned tights in this coming new year.  You will be pleasantly surprised at the ways they complement outfits – it’s an easy way to update last year’s looks.  Perfectly chic worn under knee-length skirts and midi dresses.

We are fans of the fabulous yet affordable selection of tights from Hue.  Their tights come in a wide array of colors, prints and fabric choices.  Be sure to try them as they are some of the most comfortable tights available.
Here is the important question, just how would you wear these fancy tights to work?
For a subtle office-appropriate style, try tone-on-tone looks – black or gray tights with a black dress, cream or ivory tights for lighter dresses.  These elegant diamond tights below are also from Hue.

Top – Dorothy Perkins, Skirt – Target, Coat – H&M, Earrings – Wet Seal, Tights – Modcloth, Shoes – H&M

Wearing a green sweater with tights is great if your sweater is oversized. Since green blends well with neutral colors, stick to black, dark brown or dark blue tights. Accent the look with a pair of killer black ankle boots with matching black headband or flower clip for a really cute outfit. Choose a light brown bag to complement your green.
